Players control their characters from a third-person perspective as they navigate through a number of different environments including dangerous areas such as dungeons and towns where they may interact with non-player characters. While previous Breath of Fire games took place in fantasy environments containing open areas, Dragon Quarter features a distinct science fiction motif that sets the game in a series of underground bunkers 1000m below the surface in an industrialized, post-apocalyptic environment. As players progress through the game, they must travel upward through a network of tunnels while battling enemies and collecting keys in order to advance. The game uses a map system that alerts players to the location of nearby doors, treasures, and enemies to aid them in navigation.

Rather than experiencing the entire game in a single play-through, Dragon Quarter is designed to encourage the player to play through the title multiple times in order to experience the whole story. Using the Scenario Overlay (SOL) System, certain plot points and areas of the game are only accessible if the player's D-Ratio number is high enough. When players begin the game, their D-Ratio is represented as the fraction 1/8192, and can only be raised by continually restarting the game and using the SOL: Restore function, which allows them to begin a brand-new game while carrying over all accumulated items, equipment, and skills found up until that point. Progress is saved to the PlayStation 2's memory card using limited Save Tokens found during gameplay. Players may also suspend their game as many times as they wish by creating a temporary save at certain areas in the game, which are deleted as soon as they are loaded.

When a player reaches a certain point in the game, they obtain the ability to use powerful dragon abilities and receive a D-Counter at the top of the screen represented as a percentage. When the D-Counter reaches 100 percent, the game ends and the player is sent back to their last permanent save. The meter raises continually as the player uses these abilities in or out of battle and can only be lowered by restarting using SOL: Restore.

Battles in Dragon Quarter use the Positive Encounter and Tactics System (PETS), which is described by Capcom as a "combined real-time and turn-based combat". A battle begins when a character comes in contact with an on-screen enemy creature, with the player gaining a pre-emptive strike advantage if they strike the enemy with their weapon beforehand. Players may also avoid combat by setting traps to slow down or stop enemies from approaching, or by leaving food to attract them to it. While in the battle screen, each character and enemy present take action by order of their "agility" statistic, with each participant allowed free movement around the battle area during their turn. Characters are given an allocation of Active Points (AP) at the start of each turn, with the number decreasing with each step and attack they make. Attacks are divided into three levels, with higher level attacks costing more AP to use but dealing more damage, and may be strung together into combination attacks. A character may learn new attacks by equipping new weapons and by finding Attack Skills scattered throughout the game. A battle is won either when all enemies are defeated or have fled the battle area, with victories earning the player experience points that allow characters to gain levels and become stronger, along bonus Party Experience awarded based on combat performance.

The game also prominently features a number of Breeders' Cup winning horses, such as Smarty Jones, Man o' War, Funny Cide, and Seabiscuit. The game covers the three primary disciplines associated with horseracing--jockeying, stable management, and wagering. For pure on-the-track action, there's the quick race mode, where you can define the track, track surface, distance, the number of horses on the track, and weather conditions before choosing one of the game's fictional horses and hitting the track. You can also go in a head-to-head race with one of the featured Breeders' Cup winners in the "challenge a champion" mode.

It's typical for a horseracing game to take a somewhat hands-off approach to jockeying, and Breeders' Cup doesn't stray too far from this convention, allowing you to influence how hard the jockey pushes the horse, as well as the lane position, using the left analog stick. A quick tap of the X button at the starting gate will give you a good jump off the line, and near the end of the race you'll be prompted to hit the X button in order to use the riding crop. Both of these actions are timing based, though they're also fairly forgiving. Mostly what you have to worry about is riding your horse too hard. There's a stamina meter that you'll have to keep an eye on, though often it's possible to ride full tilt for the entire race and still have stamina to spare. The other danger in riding your horse too hard is injury, though this happens only in the game's career mode, and even then it's always possible to recover with a little R&R. The whole jockey experience here just ends up feeling really simple and not particularly challenging.

The wagering in Breeders' Cup features much more depth and, in turn, is much more engaging than actually racing the horses. A day at the races is a mode that lets you spend a full eight-race day at one of the game's 15 real-world tracks putting money on the ponies. You're given a view of the virtual paddock before each race, which serves as a more colorful racing form, giving you access to details like the horse's parents, the win percentages of the jockey, and the horse's lifetime performance--including a breakdown of performance on both dirt and turf tracks. Whether you're able to digest any of this information into something meaningful, or you simply pick the horse with the funniest name, your next step is to place your bet. The betting system lets you place bets anywhere from $2 to thousands of dollars, and you can place standard win, place, and show bets, as well as more involved bets like daily doubles, exacta, trifecta, and pick three. Once you've placed your bet, you can choose to watch the race play out, or you can cut to the chase and just see who won. Your winnings in this mode can carry from one day to another, allowing you to rack up a massive bankroll, but the winnings can't be transferred to any of the other modes, and there's no real reward for your wins, leaving this mode feeling more than a little futile.

The career mode wraps up all three disciplines in a single package. Here you're given a stable where you can house up to six horses, train them, race them, and wager on them. You start off with just one horse, and you can acquire additional horses by breeding someone else's horses for a fee, though there's no option to put your own horses out to stud. The passage of time is defined by weekly races, in which you can choose to enter any of your eligible horses, and in between races you can adjust your horse's training regimen. Though each of the eight training options can help develop different characteristics in your horses, what you really need to look out for here is fatigue, because not only is a horse that's fatigued less likely to perform well on the track, it's also more likely to get injured. It's all quite streamlined, and it's easy to burn through the weeks, but the pacing of this mode ends up being extremely tedious, because you can't just jump to the races that you have horses in. If you have only one horse participating that day, and it's in the eighth race, you still have to skip past the first seven races to get there. It's especially irritating when you decide to take a week off from competing entirely.

The game's plain visuals don't make the proceedings more enticing, either. To its credit, the game does a fair job of capturing the look and feel of the real-world racetracks, though lots of muddled textures and an overall chunky look take away from the effect. The riders and horses are similarly simplistic in design. Every horse in the game shares the exact same running animation, which isn't particularly smooth and can be downright stuttery when turning corners. You can expect some amateurish rain and fog effects, which often have as much of an effect on the frame rate as they do on the atmosphere.

Earned in Blood includes several new multiplayer missions, weapons and vehicles, plus a new co-op skirmish mode. The AI of enemies has also been improved considerably in this game, while level designs are more open-ended than the original.

The story is essentially told as a "reflection" on the events that took place earlier, as Army historian Colonel S.L.A. Marshall is interviewing paratroopers 15+ days after D-Day. The story is divided into three parts. The first part of the game is recollection of Hartsock's time in Sergeant Matt Baker's squad during the initial D-Day invasion. The second part picks up when he takes command of 2nd Squad, 3rd Platoon during the liberation and defense of Carentan, and the eventual link up between 82nd and 101st Airborne Division at the town of Baupte. The final part will take place in and around Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte. Although the first part takes place under Baker's command, every mission is one not included in Road to Hill 30. The player commands Desola, Allen, and Garnett from 3rd Squad, and some soldiers from 2nd Squad at first. Then the game switches the player to command the entire 2nd Squad after the Battle of Bloody Gulch (Hill 30).

Hartsock's squad consists of the remains of the original 2nd Squad (Cpl. Franklin Paddock, Pvt. Dean "Friar" Winchell, and Pfc. James Marsh) and the remnants of 1st Squad (Cpl. Jacob Campbell, Pvt. Will Paige, and Pvt. Derrick McConnell). In addition, the player will also be in command of Corporal (later promoted to Sergeant) Seamus Doyle of the 82nd Airborne during the initial D-Day invasion in early parts of the game.

These take place within rush-hour traffic, and include circuit racing, Road Rage (where players cause as many rivals to crash as possible within a time limit, or until the player's car is wrecked), Burning Lap (a single-lap, single-racer time attack mode), Eliminator (a circuit race where every thirty seconds, the last-placed racer's car is detonated; the race continues until only one racer is left), and Crash (where the player is placed at a junction with the aim of accumulating as many "Crash Dollars" as possible). A new gameplay feature in Burnout Revenge is the ability to ram same-way small to medium traffic, known as "traffic checking", propelling the rammed car forward; the event in which a "checked" car hits a rival is considered as a Traffic Takedown. Traffic checking is the focus of a new race type, Traffic Attack (whereby a player must earn a set amount of Crash Dollars through checking traffic), which can be used later on.

During these events, players have access to a limited amount of boost which is acquired through various dangerous driving techniques, including but not limited to driving on the wrong side of the road, tailgating opponents and drifting. Unique to the series is the concept of battling other rivals; unlike other video games in the racing genre, players are encouraged, and sometimes even required, to ram rival cars and cause traffic to crash. Causing a rival to crash is referred to as a "Takedown", rewarding the player by extending the length of their boost gauge and completely refilling it. In designated events, boost can also be used to activate a "Crashbreaker" during a crash, detonating the car and causing other nearby cars to crash. When the rival car takes the player down, the player will have to take the ultimate REVENGE by taking down the revenge rivals (which the arrow at the top of the car turned red) is referred to as "Revenge Takedown".

In the main single-player game mode, players compete in a world tour consisting of 169 events across three continents, divided into a series of 11 "ranks" (Rank 11 has no events). The ranks which a player has access to is determined by their "Revenge Rank", which increases after completing events. By increasing their Rank sufficiently, the player "ranks up" and unlocks the next rank of events.

There are 77 cars in the game, some of which can only be used for crash events. The SUVs and saloon cars are some of them.

The game also features support for multiplayer gameplay, both online and offline. In addition to the racing modes, the game features three types of Crash modes: Crash Battle (multiple players attempt a junction at the same time), Crash Party (players take turns at attempting junctions across several rounds), and Crash Tour (a golf-like version of Crash Party, with players attempting to accumulate a certain amount of Crash Dollars in as few attempts as possible; after the last round ends the player with the lowest score wins).

Game Play

Ace Combat Zero's gameplay is split into a single-player campaign mode and a two-player versus mode. The mechanics themselves are a mix of features from Ace Combat 4 and 5.

The game features primarily older versions of fighter aircraft seen in its predecessor game, such as the F-15C, F/A-18C, and several second- and third-generation fighters like the Saab 35 Draken. The player's first airplane is an F-5 Tiger II, but will be able to acquire other more advanced aircraft by destroying targets to earn credits. The game's official superfighters are the ADF-01 Falken from Ace Combat 5 and the ADFX-02 Morgan, but players can access the X-02 Wyvern from Ace Combat 4.

The game revives Ace Combat 4's aircraft customization system - players can buy up to three SP weapons per plane but will only choose one for the mission; they can also pick their wingman's SP weapon but not their plane. Another returning feature from Ace Combat 4 is the ability to withdraw from the battlefield for rearming at a home base during long missions.

Zero retains Ace Combat 5's wingman-command system. During most campaign missions, the player can issue orders to the AI wingman using the DualShock controller's directional pad.

The game continues the Ace Combat franchise's tradition of taking on aces who fly aircraft with unique paint schemes. Aside from the pilots and their squadrons whom the player faces as boss characters, many missions will have other enemy aces scattered all over the game map; defeating them will see their unique plane and short pilot biographies listed in an in-game digital album.
